Il saggio traccia un quadro della politica culturale nazista nell'ambito della musica, con particolare riferimento alla mostra Entartete Musik ("Musica degenerata", 1938) e ai compositori attivi nel ghetto di Theresienstadt. L'ultimo capitolo è dedicato ai percorsi biografici e artistici di Viktor Ullmann e alla genesi, alla drammaturgia e ai caratteri musicali dell'opera in un atto "Der Kaiser von Atlantis" (L'Imperatore di Atlantide, 1943-44).

Nel 1943-44 Viktor Ullmann compone a Theresienstadt l'opera in un atto "L'Imperatore di Atlantide" (Der Kaiser von Atlantis), su libretto di Peter Kien. Il volume ricostruisce la genesi dell'opera e ne descrive i percorsi narrativi e gli influssi musicali (dal cabaret stilizzato di Kurt Weill, alla dodecafonia e al "Canto della Terra" di Mahler), indagando le ragioni per cui lo spettacolo non fu mai rappresentato all'interno del ghetto. In the years in which he was deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto (1943-44), Viktor Ullmann wrote his last Piano Sonatas, the one-act Der Kaiser von Atlantis (The Emperor of Atlantis), which constitutes his testament focuses on the genesis, dramaturgy and symbols of the work, investigating its various musical suggestions: from cabaret to the music of Mahler.
